Medical Weight Loss Reviews

Colazal reviewColazal is a brand name prescription drug manufactured by Salix Pharmaceuticals. It is primarily used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis in adults and children aged 5 years or older.

Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-term inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the digestive tract, primarily the colon (the large intestine). Ulcerative colitis affects the innermost lining of the colon and rectum. Symptoms usually develop over time and often include abdominal pain, diarrhea and sometimes bloody stool. The condition can be debilitating and in some cases, it may even result in life-threatening complications. There is no cure for the condition, but treatment, such as Colazal, can reduce signs and symptoms and even lead to long-term remission.

Balsalazide disodium is the generic name for Colazal, and it belongs to a class of drugs that are known as aminosalicylates. It works by reducing swelling in the colon. It can help to relieve symptoms of the disease including stomach pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding.

This medication is typically taken orally with or without food, 3 times daily. That being said, dosage is often based on a user’s age, medical condition and response to therapy. It is important to take Colazal exactly as it has been prescribed.

Typically, Colazal is prescribed only for a short period of time, usually between 8 to 12 weeks. Do not stop this medication without first consulting with your doctor and do not take it for longer than it has been prescribed.

Some people experience side effects when taking Colazal. Inform your doctor if your condition becomes worse or if you experience any of the following symptoms: nausea, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, joint pain, fever, abdominal pain, difficulty sleeping, sore throat, appetite loss. Although rare, this medication may also lead to other serious side effects including unusual/extreme tiredness, burning/painful urination, severe stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, dark urine, yellowing of skin/eyes, etc. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of these or other side effects.

Before taking Colazal tell your doctor if you have a health condition, especially if you have kidney disease, liver disease or pyloric stenosis (stomach condition). Also inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast feeding. You should not take this drug if you are allergic to balsalazide. Furthermore, this medication contains sodium. As such, inform your doctor if you are on a low salt diet.
