Cimetidine is the generic drug name for a prescription medication that is primarily prescribed by doctors to patients who suffer from digestive disorders such as stomach ulcers, intestinal ulcers (small intestine) and gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD). It may also be used to treat inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis) caused by acid reflux and certain conditions that may cause an increase in acid secretions. The brand name form of this drug is Tagamet.

Cimetidine is an H2 (histamine) blocker. It functions by blocking histamine, one of the body’s chemicals that stimulates the release of acid into the stomach. In other words, cimetidine works by decreasing acidity in the stomach. In addition to treating ulcers, it can also prevent them from returning after they have healed.

Typically, cimetidine is taken as an oral medication and is meant to be taken daily around the same time each day with a full glass of water to obtain the greatest results. That said, this medication should be used exactly as it has been prescribed by your doctor. You should not increase or decrease the dose without first consulting your healthcare practitioner.

The most common side effects linked to taking cimetidine include; headache, dizziness or diarrhea. Other more serious but less common effects that may occur include: mental/mood changes, difficulty urinating, muscle and/or joint pain, decreased libido, swelling in the breasts, soreness in males, easy bruising, persistent cough or sore throat, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, dark urine, jaundice, severe abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, etc. If any of these occur, speak to your doctor immediately. Also, inform your doctor if your condition and/or symptoms do not improve or if they worsen.

Prior to taking cimetidine, inform your doctor about any medications you may currently be taking or of any pre or current health conditions. Also inform him or her if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or if your are nursing.

It should also be noted that a less potent dose of this drug is available over-the-counter for treating occasional heartburn that results from too much acid in the stomach. If you decide to take this OTC medication to treat occasional heartburn, be sure to read the manufacturer’s package instructions. It is also a good idea to consult with your doctor prior to using it, especially if you suffer from frequent heartburn or indigestion or if you are pregnant, nursing or you have another medical condition.
